The Little Debbies opened the show to a very small crowd at the Social on Monday, 30 March. Those who didn't feel the need to see the opening bands for the Black Lips missed out. These four girl rockers may only have been together as a band for less than a year, but they have undeniable talent and put on a great show. The Little Debbies rocked out on stage for about twenty minutes outfitted in fun dresses and boots, incorporating fringe and sequins created a quirky stage presence. They played an assortment of original songs, as well as covering Patsy Cline's "Got a Lotta Rhythm in My Soul". The Orlando, FL natives are currently raising money in order to go on tour.
Next up on stage was Gentleman Jesse and His Men, with the Social slowly filling up. This band from Atlanta, GA has been on the Black Lips tour for a month. The 30 minute set featured their most popular songs, such as "Careful What You Wish For". The set ended with fog and a silly string attack from some big fans in the audience.
When it was finally time for headliners The Black Lips, the Social was full and the crowd was teeming with energy. As I talked to a guy by the bar, he informed me that this was his fourth time seeing the band, and was hoping to see some of the on-stage antics that they are famous for, since this was the last show on the current tour. The Black Lips have been touring since January and were looking forward to heading back home to Atlanta the following day. The boys shared anecdotes in between songs, such as getting a Mickey Mouse hat signed by both Mickey and Spiderman, "That's what you call a double win." When the band began the song "Drugs", the crowd went crazy and the energy remained high for the rest of the show. The songs performed were an assortment from the newest album, 200 Thousand Million, as well past favourites such as "Bad Kids". The Black Lips ended the show with many bows, and then after several minutes of shouting from the audience for "One. More. Song!", they came back out on stage and announced, "We got one more!" The night ended with "Short Fuse" much to the crowd's satisfaction. Unfortunately, the band was pretty well behaved and we didn't get to see any of their famous acting up, but it was a fun show and I may just have discovered my new favourite band in the openers, The Little Debbies.
