Two Tongues - Two Tongues

For years, beloved Say Anything front man Max Bemis has been generally open with his adoration for Saves the Day lead man Chris Conley. From his public statements of idolization for the nasally blonde, to a co-tour, to an In Defense of the Genre collaboration, and finally to a conjoined side project, teacher and apprentice came together to form the band Two Tongues.
Along with David Soloway, bass player of Saves the Day and Coby Linder long term crony of Bemis and drummer of Say Anything, the quartet has released their optimally self titled debut album.
With only one listen, the most distinguished aspect of this emo-dream-come-true collaboration is how effortlessly the two musicians combine both style and sound. From song to song as Bemis and Conley trade vocals, music bounces from the harder punctuated Say Anything melodies to the catchy speedy sounds of Saves the Day. Just when you think your melodic mind has settled into a new STD album, Bemis chimes in “I wish your eyes were glued to me” in “Alice.”
“Crawl” masks itself as a lost track from …Is A Real Boy just until Conley backs the chorus with his unmistakable vocal delivery. In “Wowee Zowee” it is almost impossible to pick who had the upper hand in writing. Conley seems to embrace Bemis’s style and vice versa offering a magical sound that any listener can enjoy, and during which the most serious Conley/Bemis fans will assuredly gasp for air.
In “Interlude” Eisley singer and fiancé of Bemis, Sheri Dupree, delivers, as always, her soothing and beautiful vocals. A short but Eisley like tune adds a nice touch to the album, as Bemis stated much of the album was inspired by his new love.
The album concludes with a cover of the Ween song “Even if You Don’t” which was a perfect fit for this crazy combination of musicians.
To all fans of Saves the Day and/or Say Anything, or even to those who want to see a piece of history in the making, Two Tongues is next the great collaboration of the genre.
